Kentucky GRILLED Chicken - Is it good for you? PDF Print E-mail

Unless you live under or rock or in a cave you've probably heard of KFC's new "healthy" alternative Kentucky Grilled Chicken. Oprah even had a giveaway promotion for it. They are promoting it as a healthy food choice, but is it?

Here are the ingredients from KFC's website: (Click here for the whole pdf - requires Adobe Acrobat)

KFC® Grilled Chicken Fresh Chicken Marinated with: Salt, Sodium Phosphate, and Monosodium Glutamate Seasoned with: Maltodextrin, Salt, Bleached Wheat Flour, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and Cottonseed Oil, Monosodium Glutamate, Spices, Palm Oil, Natural Flavor, Garlic Powder, Soy Sauce (Soybean, Wheat, Salt), Chicken Fat, Chicken Broth, Autolyzed Yeast, Beef Powder, Rendered Beef Fat, Extractives of Turmeric, Dehydrated Carrot, Onion Powder, and Not More Than 2% Each of Calcium Silicate and Silicon Dioxide Added as Anticaking Agents. Contains Wheat and Soy.

Bold is mine.

If you can't eat Chinese food due to the MSG you'd better stay away from "KGC". Tons of salt, some yummy soy too (a whole other rant - don't eat soy!)

Can someone please tell my why they are putting Beef Powder & Beef FAT on a chicken? If you are not eating beef for whatever reason, you'' not want to eat KGC either.

Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and Cottonseed oils are TRANS-fats, which KFC was supposed to be removing from their foods.

So overall I have to say, stay the hell away from this garbage! It may not be as bad as the fried version, but it is by no means healthy. And let's not forget that the meals still come with sides:

Mashed potatoes - Potatoes (Color and Flavor Protected with Sodium Bisulfite, Citric Acid, and BHT), Salt, Corn Syrup Solids, Butter, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Monoglycerides, Sodium Pyrophosphate, Nonfat Milk, Natural Flavor, Calcium Phosphate, Sodium Caseinate, Potassium Phosphate, Artificial Flavor, Mono-and Diglycerides, Artificial Color. Contains Milk and Wheat.

Biscuits - enriched flour Enriched Flour Bleached (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Ferrous Sulfate, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Partially Hydrogenated Palm Kernel, Soybean and Cottonseed Oil, Buttermilk, Sugar, Baking Soda, Salt, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Nonfat Milk, Sodium Caseinate, DATEM, Whey Protein Concentrate, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Whey, Wheat Protein Isolate, Natural Flavor. Liquid and Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Salt, Soybean Lecithin, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Beta Carotene (Color). Contains Wheat, Soy and Milk.

I think the cole slaw is the only thing 1/2 decent - Vegetables: Chopped Cabbage, Carrots, and Onions. Sauce: Sugar, Soybean Oil, Vinegar (Distilled Vinegar, Corn and Cider Vinegar, Malt Vinegar, And Natural Flavors), Water, Salt, Whole Eggs, Modified Corn Starch, Mustard Flour, Xanthan Gum, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Paprika Extractives, Paprika, And Caramel Color. Contains Egg.

My advice is to stay away from all fast food, buy your own chicken and grill it yourself. It really only takes 10  minutes to grill a chicken breast on the grill and you can season it or use marinades that are low in sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. Have a nice spinach salad with Olive Oil and balsamic vinegar (no croutons or bacon bits) or some other fresh veggies and fresh fruit for dessert.
