Diet Lies II - Sugar

PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 September 2007

In part one we looked at what is in the foods we eat vs. what is on the label. In Part II we will look at Sugars

Vitamin Water....what's in it?? Mostly sugar. If you want vitamins, first eat lots of Fresh Veggies (do NOT get canned all the nutrients get cooked out in the canning process) , failing that a good multi-vitamin. If you are thirsty drink water. If you are involved in very intense physical training or work, Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drink is ok. But be wary. A typical 32oz bottle of Gatorade is really 4 servings, each serving is 14gm of sugar. If you drink the the whole bottle as most do you just ingested 56gms of sugar.

Sugar causes insulin spikes. You get an energy rush from eating it, then you crash, then you eat more & crash. This is not  a healthy pattern. It also inhibits the releases of human growth hormone which then suppresses the immune system. Insulin also causes the body to store fat and increases tri-glyceride levels.

Sugar has absolutely no nutrients.

Here is a list of things sugar does to the body:

  • Sugar can suppress the immune system.
  • Sugar can upset the body's mineral balance.
  • Sugar can contribute to hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, concentration difficulties, and crankiness in children.
  • Sugar can produce a significant rise in triglycerides.
  • Sugar can cause drowsiness and decreased activity in children.
  • Sugar can reduce helpful high density cholesterol (HDLs).
  • Sugar can promote an elevation of harmful cholesterol (LDLs).
  • Sugar can cause hypoglycemia.
  • Sugar contributes to a weakened defense against bacterial infection.
  • Sugar can cause kidney damage.
  • Sugar can increase the risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Sugar may lead to chromium deficiency.
  • Sugar can cause copper deficiency.
  • Sugar interferes with absorption of calcium and magnesium.
  • Sugar can increase fasting levels of blood glucose.
  • Sugar can promote tooth decay.
  • Sugar can produce an acidic stomach.
  • Sugar can raise adrenaline levels in children.
  • Sugar can lead to periodontal disease.
  • Sugar can speed the aging process, causing wrinkles and grey hair.
  • Sugar can increase total cholesterol.
  • Sugar can contribute to weight gain and obesity.
  • High intake of sugar increases the risk of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Sugar can contribute to diabetes.
  • Sugar can contribute to osteoporosis.
  • Sugar can cause a decrease in insulin sensitivity.
  • Sugar leads to decreased glucose tolerance.
  • Sugar can cause cardiovascular disease.
  • Sugar can increase systolic blood pressure.
  • Sugar causes food allergies.
  • Sugar can cause free radical formation in the bloodstream.
  • Sugar can cause toxemia during pregnancy.
  • Sugar can contribute to eczema in children.
  • Sugar can over stress the pancreas, causing damage.
  • Sugar can cause atherosclerosis.
  • Sugar can compromise the lining of the capillaries.
  • Sugar can cause liver cells to divide, increasing the size of the liver.
  • Sugar can increase the amount of fat in the liver.
  • Sugar can increase kidney size and produce pathological changes in the kidney.
  • Sugar can cause depression.
  • Sugar can increase the body's fluid retention.
  • Sugar can cause hormonal imbalance.
  • Sugar can cause hypertension.
  • Sugar can cause headaches, including migraines.
  • Sugar can cause an increase in delta, alpha and theta brain waves, which can alter the mind's ability to think clearly.
  • Sugar can increase blood platelet adhesiveness which increases risk of blood clots and strokes.
  • Sugar can increase insulin responses in those consuming high-sugar diets compared to low sugar diets.
  • Sugar increases bacterial fermentation in the colon.

If you must have sugar limit it to 10 teaspoons per day and READ THE LABEL!!!!! Sugar is in many packaged foods. Whether it is called, sucrose, glucose, fructose or high fructose corn syrup. Even honey, which some think is better than sugar is 95% sucrose and has the same adverse affects.

Fructose from fruits doesn't affect the body the same way as fructose that is added to foods. Fructose added to foods is synthetic and High Fructose Corn syrup is made, obviously, from corn and is actually worse for you than sucrose.

HFCS & fructose added to food is more readily converted to fat.

One or two pieces of fruit per day is fine, but commercial fruit juices and any products containing high fructose corn syrup are more dangerous than sugar and should be removed from the diet..

Now look at that dressing you just poured all over your nice health salad, full of fresh green, and veggies. If you use any bottled dressing it is almost certain to contain High Fructose Corn syrup (HCFS).

No wonder you can't lose weight. What you thought was healthy is killing you. I use only balsamic vinegar and olive oil on my salads. The olive oil is a good oil, it helps the skin and bones. The balsamic vinegar helps with digestion and keeps the stomach acids in balance.

READ THE LABEL!!! Avoid anything with sucrose, fructose, dextrose, or any other -ose including HFCS especially if it is in the first 3 ingredients

A good article on the dangers of High Fructose Corn syrup  http://www.westonaprice.org/modernfood/highfructose.html

avatar Kind of makes you wonder why sugar is used...well, that goes back to the first
article that points to the food industries selling tactics. Sugar tastes good
and whether you want to admit it or not, fat adds flavor to food. So, if you
like the taste...you'll buy more! Sadly, too few people pay attention to this.
Another good drink is tea. Tea provides antioxidants that help the body's
immune system and it provides a flavorful alternative to plain water. Green and
Black teas have proven track records for aiding in personal health. Just make
sure to not add sugar..or very little if that. As for olive oil...right on! No
fat, no fillers, no problems and it tastes great on salads!

avatar Actually Olive Oil is all fat, good fat, the kind you need to ingest. Coconut
Oil is another good oil to take

avatar MSG, monosodium glutamate is in almost everything. It is a flavor enhancer and
the food manufacturers put it in there so you will eat more.
