Diet Lies - Labels PDF Print E-mail

foodlabelcartoon.png

What is really in those foods you eat? Is it REALLY healthy?

Is low Fat really that good?

What about low or 0 sugar?

The food industry wants you to eat more, they don't care if you are fat or healthy. They remove the sugar & replace it with sugar alcohols that are undigestible and unabsorborable by the human body. Sounds good right?? Except that for many people these sugar alcohols such as malititol act as laxatives in many people.

If they take out the fat, what do they replace it with if the serving size remains the same?? More of something else. Take out the fatr add more sugar, or a fake fat that, like sugar, also acts as a laxative in many people.

Here's how manufacturers reduce the carbs in various foods:
They replace refined wheat flour with soy flour (higher in protein), soy protein, or wheat protein.

They add extra fiber, such as wheat bran, oat bran, or other fiber

They add high-fat ingredients

They replace sugar with sugar alcohols (maltitol, lactitol, or sorbitol) or artificial sweeteners.

NO – not unhealthy….but the end up having the same amount of calories as regular foods.

It's not the carbs it's the type of carbs.

Let's look at "Wheat Bread". Read the label or even easier pick up the loaf. Chances are good if the loaf is heavy and dense it is made of whole grains. If the label says "enriched wheat flour" put it back. Enriched means they took wheat that was stripped of all the natural vitamins and minerals during processsing and added them in after the fact. Then they added molasses to make it brown again.

If you must eat bread choose one that really does contain whole grains. They are usually quite a bit more expensive though.

Speaking of more expensive, anything labeled low card is always more expensive. Why? Becuase they can charge what they want knowing people will pay anything to loose weight.

Beware of junk... Protein bars that are really glorified candy bars. I recently saw a box of "100 Calorie pack" cookies. reading the label they ad some sygar and few grams of protein and minimal fat but mostly is was just junk. If you want a snack eat carrots. You can eat a LOT of carrots for 100 calories!

The point here is to always READ THE LABEL.........

avatar That is absolutely correct Dave...A lot of people don't understand that business
is business and the food industries are only concerned with making a fast buck!
If all consumers were to pay more attention to what they buy and read the
labels, it would force these companies to re-think their selling strategies and
cater to our health, rather than our bank accounts!
