Firefighters have to be in top physical condition. You have to drag & control hoses, lift ladders, you have an oxygen tank strapped to your back. You climb stairs, swing an axe, run lift unconscious victims from the floor & have to carry them down, or up flights of stairs. You don't get a break until the fire is out. Then you have to put all your equipment away. So why does your training consist of bodybuilding routines and endless miles of jogging? How do those or other typical workouts done in the huge "Globo-gyms" emulate conditions you deal with every time you get called out to a fire? They don't. Then why are you still doing it?? Kentuckiana CrossFit offers fresh and innovative ways to train you using functional movements and a variety of tools. For example: picking up sandbags (emulates an unconscious person), pullups for when you have to scale a wall without a ladder, kettlebells for all round strength and endurance (no more running) and core strength (no more endless sit-ups), Olympic lifting for explosive power. All of these tools including body-weight training will enhance your fitness levels making your more efficient in everything you do. You won't have to worry about running out of gas 1/2 through a fire, getting winded running up a flight of stairs or throwing your back out picking some one up. The bottom line is you become much better equipped to handle everything you will encounter as a fire fighter. Here are just a few Fire Departments that utilize CrossFit methods:

From around the country here's what others are saying about CrossFit
Just wanted to put my two cents in. I am both a Fire Captain and an avid martial artist. Since starting the CrossFit workouts I have noticed a major improvement in my strength endurance and overall performance while Firefighting and when I'm "rolling on the mats". I have been running 3 times a week and doing the "standard" weightlifting workouts that are found in the muscle mags for years. These workouts didn't better my athletic performance at the intensity level required for either work or play. I now have a number of Firefighters performing the Crossfit workouts and they are sold on CrossFit. I just wanted to say thanks for making workouts like these accessible to the masses.
There is NO better fitness program for fire fighters or law enforcement."
